Advocacy groups call on Jacksonville leaders to create stronger protections against pollution

Local groups called on the Biden Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency Thursday morning to create stronger safeguards against Mercury pollution. In a press conference held in Downtown Jacksonville, representatives from the Sierra Club of Northeast Florida and other organizations voiced their concerns and desires for the future.

The Sierra Club and other environmental groups are calling on JEA to make major changes in Jacksonville. The groups want to see the Northside Generating Station shut down within the next 30 years. They say their studies show it’s one of the biggest air polluters in Jacksonville. The coal-fired plant has been operating since the 1970s. It’s the last coal-fired plant in Jacksonville.
